Frankly, Norton is not the best antivirus. I'd suggest getting a new one: Avast! is free and NOD32 is more in-depth but costs. Otherwise, try searching the name that Norton says to see what others have to say about that particular virus.

It also would be a really good idea to get a firewall. The basic firewall that Windows released with SP2 is, well...crap. A good free option is ZoneAlarm. They have a pay version that has a lot of nice %26 useful options, but the free version is perfectly functional. A functional firewall will not only limit what comes into your PC, but also what goes OUT--like info from keyloggers and such. Good luck.
You could install AVG, which is a free anti-virus software. When you install it, make sure everything updates, then unplug your computer from the Internet so the viruses can't communicate with the Internet, then scan the computer and remove the viruses.
Some of them will stay there once you restart the computer. Best thing you can do is have your OS CD and a valid serial if you need one to format and re-install the OS.
Some companies offer a dumbed down free anti virus programs. Really though...it wouldnt hurt to invest it a decent one to protect your computer, privacy, and information.

Trial version helps you scan your computer for free, but they will not remove all the infections, only few of them. They will ask you to buy the full version to be able to eliminate them all.
go out to symantec web sight and download a tool to remove it.
First: Go to Java and download Update 7 and then remove all older versions from Add/Remove programs.

Dont download Exe files... Songs wont carry virus's(though they mite have licenseces which can lead you to sites with em(RARELY))and the applications CLEAN... Dont download porgrams, if you are then download Zips or Rars... that way You can get rid of them clean and easy... I've always found Symantec's stuff to work for me, so I don't know what to tell you. My computer was really jaked up recently because I didn't have anything but free stuff installed, and I got Norton antivirus and ran it once and it fixed literally everything and I haven't had any problems since. The virus protection and regular scans work for me.

yeah it's best to go with safe mode....some of those spyware apps are probably protected while you're trying to remove them.

Your current user level status has some restricted privilages...if you can log in as an admin user you'd have more options. In any case, when you boot into safe mode just select Administrator on the login. It's a seperate admin account resident in xp and does not require a password.

Update the spybot first...safe mode disables the network. then boot to safe and run that....also check through your add/remove programs....sometimes free ware applications that might have been installed can contain bundled adware and crap like that. run through the add/remove as well as program folder groups to weed out anything you know doesn't belong. And if you can manage look through the registry as well. Sometimes leaving the registry keys behind will alow it to regenerate

All file sharing runs the risk of being infected. what you need to do is save the file to desk top then right click on it and then click scan. if shows no virus then download and run. good luck.
i read somewhere that something like 35% of files on limewire are spyware/adware/viruses! Of course these are mostly attached to video files and so i don't reccomend downloading video from them. i don't know about gendou but i do know that torrents are a fairly safe, if more confusing.

As I have said with other people more info is needed. Their are 1000000's of viruses out thier with even more variants. Just ''virus'' is not enough. Some viruses must use a seperate remover. Some open vunribilities that need to be fixed back. These are specific to the virus. (Not meaning to be rude, just not good at wording things)

Revision: If Yahoo's scanner did not give you this information thier is a free online (No Install) scanner at Symantec.com (I don't remember exact location). If you are infected an istillation may be stoped half way by the virus. Even if the online scan is aborted you dont have somthing with bits installed and bits missing. BTW Symantec is the Manifaturer of Noton AntiVirus.

Ok, I know I have a virus in my pc cause my anti-virus expired. I bought a new one did a system scan cleaned up 12 adware and p2pnetwork viruses got rid of them but some how I feel like I still have one lingering in my pc still infecting it, like a downloader.

I ran full system scan and it does not find the infection but I know its there because I can no longer delete programs from the add/delete program lists.

What is my next step? Will a full system restore fix this problem? I know I will lose most of my data but I want to know if doing that will be a sure fix.

I also get a window from ''HP'' saying that I need to update a certificate so that my pc can download up to date software. the certificate looks like someone scanned it and paste and the exp date on the certification is mar 2005. that happens everytime I start the pc. Which I keep declining.

Be careful what you install and run. For instance, Avast is an anti-virus program. You already have AVG (same one I use, and it's great, but keep it updated). Anyway, DO NOT install two different anti-virus programs. They'll work against each other and cause nothing but headaches.

As for HijackThis (HJT), DO NOT use it by yourself. It can solve a lot of problems, but if you check the wrong thing and tell it to Fix, you could do irreparable damage to your computer. Don't use HJT unless you are getting help from a forum where experts are telling you how to do it, then do ONLY what they tell you to do with it. HJT is a tool used to get rid of malicious things on your computer, and you MUST have help with it if you don't know about adware/spyware/virus removal. Just Google search for ''free computer help,'' and you'll find several free computer help forums -- most all of them have a virus/malware removal section.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but we are talking about literally thousands of sites.

Try a different approach....Make your self Adminstrator of their computers (kids), and this will make the unable to go to any site you have not pre approved.

Start, Settings, Control Panel, look for Parental controls. If any thing confuses you youse the help icon at the top.

If you have a high speed connection you should have a modem, but I would add a router. High speed is a potentially ''always on'' connection, and needs a harware firewall (Router) you can pick up a Linksys 4 port router for about $100. It is well worth the price. Load the software before hooking up the hardware, the software will lead you through the process.

Circuit City and Best Buy and staples ought to be able to supply this. Try BEST BUY first.

I have used Norton, McAfee, and CA. To date, CA is the best. The full subscription version has Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Pop-Up, and a fully functioning firewall and mail scanner.

It also has a 365 day trial period on the AVS.

Unlike an earlier poster claimed, Norton is NOT a crap program, and will only monopolise your system resources if you don't have that much to begin with.

No. You have to install one.

There are quite a few out there for sale. There isn't one ''best'' program for everything. I prefer using the free ones for hm use, %26 have never had a problem.

Try downloading avast, avg antispyware, windows defender, spybot, %26 avg. Install, %26 update all of them. Then restart your pc %26 immediately hit the f8 key (or whatever key combination is specific to your type of pc) to startup in safe mode. Then run the software scans while in safe mode. This should detect %26 remove any problem you find. Remember to google the name of the problem(s) found to make sure there isn't any manual deletion of a file required.

The system registry is definitely something that can screw up your computer if you do something wrong in it, but be aware that the registry is easy to back up with free or commercial software. It IS a tempting idea, isn't it?:D However, what usually happens is that you are identified as a respondent, which means even MORE of whatever garbage they sent to begin with. In essence, don't encourage a bully. Make a habit of simply deleting anything that looks even remotely fishy, or which was unsolicited. Use Yahoo's SpamGuard regularly. That's about as close as you can come to fighting back, unless you are a savvy programmer with a vendetta, heh! I advise you to push them all into the background by ignoring them. I have done this for years and it really does keep most of the junk out of your hair.

Sounds like you're infected with spyware or trojans; anti viruses won't find or remove them which is why your scans are clean.

Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.

Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for personal use;

What you are doing is correct, but set your software to quaranteene them all and report when it's done. You also need a good firewall, (becides the one that comes with Windows) and an Anti Spyware program or 2.

It's...almost-kinda true. There are technically viruses for Mac OS X, but you could quite literally count them on one hand and have fingers left over, and they also don't do anything because they're all proof-of-concept viruses that couldn't even spread to more than (I think) 50 or so computers before dying out. There is indeed a security advantage to having a small market share, but OS X is inherently better constructed than Windows (which isn't saying much, but still), and based on UNIX which works differently in terms of security. A program would not be able to screw anything up on your Mac without you actually giving it permission to do so and typing in your password, which pretty much makes it pointless to make Mac malware. The security-through-obscurity argument doesn't even hold up, as there should be hundreds upon hundreds of Mac viruses now (compared to Windows' hundreds of thousands) considering how their market share has recently grown.

So the answer is that there are no *working* viruses for Macs, and a paltry few that don't work.

OR, if you already have anti-virus software for your computer then just tell it to also scan your flash drive.

Also if you want you can encrypt your whole flash drive using truecrypt. Just make sure when your making a new volume, that it takes up all your jump drive space so no viruses can get on to it, and then when you mount the truecrypt volume its just like a flash drive.

I don't think you have anything to worry about personally, because I have been using the same flash drive for about four years now and never had a problem. And I wouldn't even waste my time on virus protection with it.

Install an anti-virus program such as Avast (free) or Norton Internet Security (msrp $79) and let the program keep you protected and up-to-date. That's what these programs do.

Or you could wait until you become infected then try to oust the virus on your own. Better hope that it's not a self-mutating virus though. It's really hard to eliminate a virus on your own. After dealing with a KLEZ32 a long time ago... I know from firsthand experience.

OK. First of all it depends on what you believe, personally, being a Catholic and also not a total idiot and blind to fact, I know that evolution is real. Now, you can say that evolution is merely a tool of God, that is fine. That is not at odds with religious teaching that God created everything. Viruses can transfer too easily. I copied my antiviral and anti-spyware, as well as my firewall onto a CD-ROM, installed the new HDD, then installed the protection software before ever connecting my computer to the internet. Once your new HDD is protected, then you can consider hooking in the old HDD as a slave to transfer files.

Since you have the drive as a slave of the master, your drive can manipulate his and vice-versa. Try using a flash drive or CD to update his anti-spyware software.

Here's what you should do and you wont have any more problems.

1st, don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.

AVG is junk. I recommend this free antivirus. It is called antivir.
Sorry....AVG is the worst free antivirus in the lastest tests.

You should prefer Antivir or Havast who are as best as the commercial softwares on the market. Install also a good anti spyware.

Try this: start you computer in safe mode then re-run the antivirus, it should work.

Get anything, ANYTHING besides Symantec. They're really low-quality. You might want to have a paid antivirus, but it's not necessary. There are some good free ones, like AVG-Free Antivirus, Avast! Home Edition, and in the line of spyware/adware removal, SUPERAntiSpyware, AVG AntiSpyware, SpyBot: Search %26 Destroy, Ad-Aware 2007 Personal. Take your pick from a couple of these, run disk cleanup, defrag, blah blah blah, the usual stuff. There's also a free utility called CCleaner, which can be used to clean out unnecessary files.

I am using symantic also, others here will tell you to get rid of it, but it is easier said than done (Since you have already bought and installed the software) I have not had any problems with it yet (even though I don't like it) it can pre-installed on my new computer. Anyway back to your question. Everything is in your Settings. On your task bar there should be a Nortons Icon, right- click to open up Nortons Protection Center, once the program is up on your screen, click on ( Nortons Internet Security) this is located at the top right-side of that window After that window open up, click on ''Settings'' make sure that all settings is set on the ''ON'' mode, if all is on the look above the settings there you will see (Task and Scan) click there and another window will open up, click on (RUN FULL SYSTEM SCAN) your computer will then be scan for all viruses, make sure to keep Nortons updated, as this is just as important as the scan. You should have specified the exact model of your phone. Unless it runs the Symbian S60 R2 operating system, it is not seriously threatened by viruses. (Although proof-of-concept viruses exists for Symbian UIQ, Windows Mobile and PalmOS, they have no chance of surviving in the wild.)
