How effective is chlorine in killing germs, viruses, and bacteria?

I tend to go to the pool quite often and am wondering how effective is chlorine in killing germs, viruses, and bacteria?

''Germs'' are bacteria and viruses.

Chlorine kills some bacteria, not all of them. It doesn't bother viruses.

Germ include both viruses and bacteria. From the statement ''...go to the pool...'' i am guessing that you go to a public pool, which i notice to have a considerably higher chlorine to water ratio than pools personally owned by people. Chlorine is actually very effective in killing bacteria. About the viruses, I'm not so sure. There should not be any viruses in a pool, and there are probably not. I swim in a pool in my back yard which I very frequently swim in. My family keeps the chlorine level low and I have never gotten any kind of infection or any other sickness, besides red eyes or plugged ears, that could be directly connected to the pool.
