Often the names are found within the code of the virus itself, such as the Pakistan Brain (one of the earliest viruses) or from something the virus does (such as the Michangelo virus which was set to deliver its payload on his birthday).
Others are given ''cute'' names by the people who discover them. Those with similar names are often just modified versions of the same virus (as soon as a way is found to detect it, someone changes it just enough to get around that detection process).
