just wondering what i can keep plugged in without getting viruses from my computer onto the external hard drive. because it's kind of inconvenient sometimes when i need to get to my pictures on the external and i have to plug in the power, usb, and turn it on. just curious if i can keep anything plugged in or on safely.

its at no more risk than your internal hard drive. i would be sure your antivirus is scanning it.
